South Boston, known as Southie to residents, is actually about 5 miles east of downtown Boston. Home to the popular St. Patrick’s Day parade, Southie residents are fiercely loyal to their Boston neighborhood and show a great deal of hometown pride. Residents and visitors enjoy Southie’s beaches, and Castle Island, which boasts a military fort, a playground, and beautiful water views, is a popular picnic place. There are plenty of pubs and restaurants in South Boston, and it’s an easy commute from South Boston to downtown Boston using the MBTA Red Line, which has two stops in the area. The MBTA also runs several bus lines that serve the residential areas of South Boston. Although there are a few single family homes in South Boston, its large population requires a lot of apartment buildings and multifamily residences.
